After the Houston Texans extended their franchise record with a ninth straight win on Sunday https://www.brownsfanshop.com/Austin-Corbett-Jersey , J.J. Watt was asked to reflect on how far the team has come in the past year.“I was on the couch a year ago so this is a lot better,” said Watt, who missed the last 11 games of Houston’s 4-12 2017 season with a broken leg. “I was in a lot of pain. So it’s good for us to be winning … this is what it’s supposed to feel like. Honestly this is how you dream it up.”Deshaun Watson threw a touchdown pass and the Texans intercepted rookie Baker Mayfield three times, returning one for a score, to get the 29-13 victory over the Cleveland Browns on Sunday that extended the streak. The Texans (9-3), who opened the season 0-3, haven’t lost since Sept. 23 to take a commanding lead atop the AFC South. While they appreciate what they’ve done to turn things around, they’re quick to note that they still have plenty of work left to do.“It means a lot especially from where we came from 0-3 … but it’s not the Super Bowl so we’re still fighting,” receiver DeAndre Hopkins said.Houston raced out to a 23-0 halftime lead and added two second-half field goals by Ka’imi Fairbairn to give him five on Sunday.Mayfield, the top overall pick in this year’s draft, had his worst game of the season, throwing three interceptions for the first time since he was a freshman at Texas Tech in 2013. He entered the game having thrown nine touchdown passes with just one interception in the past three games as the Browns (4-7-1) won consecutive games for the first time since 2014.Mayfield lamented the mistakes he made in this one.“(If) I would’ve taken care of the ball Nick Chubb Jersey , this game would’ve been very close,” he said.He finished with 397 yards passing and had a touchdown pass in the fourth quarter after throwing a career-best four in a win over the Bengals last week. Houston’s fearsome pass rush, led by Watt and Jadeveon Clowney didn’t sack Mayfield, but they hurried and harassed him for much of the day.His interceptions all came before halftime to help the Texans build the big early lead.“He probably wasn’t feeling too dangerous in the first half, but he was feeling a little more dangerous in the second half,” Watt said.Houston was up 3-0 after an early field goal when Watson, who finished with 224 yards, connected with rookie Jordan Thomas on an 11-yard touchdown pass. Hopkins set up that score when he made a 24-yard reception after T.J. Carrie grabbed his dreadlocks in an attempt to slow him down two plays earlier.Zach Cunningham made it 17-0 when he grabbed his first career interception and ran 38 yards for a touchdown in the second quarter. Officials first ruled him down at the 1, but the play was reviewed and changed to a touchdown.Kareem Jackson was called for a 47-yard pass interference penalty on Cleveland’s next drive to put the Browns at their 20. But Mayfield threw another interception two plays later and it was returned 18 yards by Johnathan Joseph.Houston added another field goal to make it 20-0 with about three minutes left in the second quarter.Mayfield’s third interception came late in the second quarter when Andre Hal grabbed the ball in the end zone.Lamar Miller had 103 yards rushing for his second straight 100-yard game and fourth of the season and Hopkins had seven receptions for 91 yards.Cleveland continued to struggle in late-season games, and the Browns fell to 9-39 in December and January games since 2008.Nick Chubb got the Browns on the board in the third quarter when his 2-yard TD run cut the lead to 23-7 with about 9½ minutes left. Rashard Higgins had a 17-yard touchdown reception in the fourth quarter, but the 2-point conversion failed to leave the Browns down 29-13.Houston added another field goal after that before a mistake-filled possession by the Browns. First Mayfield threw what looked to be a 76-yard touchdown pass to rookie Antonio Callaway, but it was brought back because of a holding penalty by left tackle Greg Robinson. Two plays later Chad Thomas Color Rush Jersey , Mayfield connected with Callaway again and he gained 71 yards before rookie Justin Reid chased him down from behind and knocked the ball out of his hands just before he would have scored. It bounced into the end zone where it was recovered by the Texans.“It was just trying to make something happen,” Reid said. “I didn’t want him to score so just make a play on the ball and see if it would come out. Good thing for us it did.”INJURIESCleveland cornerback Denzel Ward left in the first half with a concussion. … Browns defensive lineman Larry Ogunjobi injured his biceps in the second quarter and didn’t return. … Joseph didn’t return after injuring his neck in the second quarter. … LB Brennan Scarlett injured his leg and didn’t return. … Houston offensive tackle Kendall Lamm left in the second half with a concussion.REMEMBERING PRESIDENT BUSHThe Texans observed a moment of silence before the game for former President George H.W. Bush, who died on Friday night in Houston at 94. Bush was a frequent visitor to Houston’s games and had participated in the coin toss at several contests. During the moment of silence pictures of Bush at various games were shown on the video screens flanked by huge 41’s made out of a collage of pictures as a further tribute to the nation’s 41st president.UP NEXTBrowns: Host the Panthers next Sunday.Texans: Host the Colts next Sunday. After the Packers hired Matt LaFleur as their new head coach in January Aaron Ripkowski Color Rush Jersey , team CEO Mark Murphy said that a group of players on the team complained that “a complacency had set in” while Mike McCarthy was still coaching the team.Murphy also said that players wanted a coach who would hold people accountable, which echoed comments that left tackle David Bakhtiari made about a change he wanted to see with the team. The former Packers coach responded to both of those comments in an interview with Rob Demovsky of ESPN.com and he took issue with the characterization of how he ran the team.“When you throw out words like complacency and accountability, that bothered me,” McCarthy said. “That’s not accurate. I’ll be first to say that coaches are in the business of being criticized. We deal with it on a daily basis. But when you throw out a statement like that, you better have it right. A big part of the success I’ve had in this league is due to a tireless work ethic. All coaches work hard, but the accountability comment was totally inaccurate. I held my coaches and players accountable every year. Our internal fine process would support that. All I know is I did my job every day and was accountable to winning in line with the standards and the values of the Green Bay Packers that were established by the likes of Ted Thompson and clearly Bob Harlan a long time ago.”While McCarthy may have issues with the way Murphy framed the decision and may be unhappy with the way it was handled, he added that it is “clear to me now that both sides needed a change” and that suggests everyone in the Packers may have been overly settled into a way of doing business that was no longer bringing the desired results. The call on the field — is for consistency and simplification at different levels of football. The NFL held a “Universal Rules Alignment Meeting” at its headquarters in New York on Tuesday, with league football operations chief Troy Vincent and Atlanta Falcons CEO Rich McKay, the head of the league’s competition committee, leading the discussion. Some team executives, the NFL players union, the head of officiating and some officials from the NCAA took part in the effort.“It’s the idea that you try to have unified safety terminology for players so they understand what the foul is and what it isn’t and then teach it all the way down beginning at the little kids, getting to high school, getting to college and getting to pros,” McKay said. One focus was rules that deal with players’ safety, such as defenders leading with the helmet or targeting defenseless players.“Hopefully we’ll come together with language that’s simpler and easier for the players to understand,” McKay said. “I think the use of the helmet foul, to lower your head to initiate contact, I think that foul will have an impact on the way players play the game.”They also looked at rules differences with cut blocks and chop blocks and kickoffs between college and the pros. The discussions will continue early next year after the end of the college and NFL seasons.“I think everything can be navigated if people are willing to come and sit and talk and communicate,” Vincent said. “It’s not a one-size-fits-all. … We learn from you, there’s some things that you’re doing, there’s some things that we’re doing. It’s really collaboration. Can it work? Absolutely.”THE OPTICS DEBATEJimmy Johnson, a two-time Super Bowl winner as coach of the Dallas Cowboys, criticized Jason Garrett for turning up at Game 3 of the World Series last Friday with his 3-4 team going into its open weekend.Johnson https://www.thepackersfanshop.com/Demetri-Goodson-Jersey , a Fox studio analyst, said before last Sunday’s games that it was a bad look for a team that had work to do, based on its record.Garrett, one of the backups to quarterback Troy Aikman for Johnson’s final season in 1993 when the Cowboys won their second straight title, passed on the chance to fire back at his old boss.“I have the utmost respect for coach Johnson,” Garrett said Thursday. “He’s been a friend and mentor to me, really through the years. That’s really all I want to say on that. I just hold him in the highest regard.”But Garrett did defend himself by pointing out that he encourages all his players to get away from the job for a few days.“If you’re a beach guy, go to the beach. If you’re a mountain guy, go to the mountains,” Garrett said. “Do whatever you want to do to get away from it, to get yourself refreshed, recharged and ready to go again.”Owner and general manager Jerry Jones said he didn’t have a problem with Garrett’s World Series excursion as it related to a team that expected to contend for the playoffs having a losing record, and a winless road mark (0-4).“I’m not associated with anybody that works any harder than Jason Garrett,” Jones said. “I know where Jason Garrett’s mind is and I know where his work ethic is.”PACKERS PARTY TIMEGive it up for left tackle David Bakhtiari, who had the best costume at the Green Bay Packers‘ Halloween party on Monday.Well, that’s at least according to quarterback Aaron Rodgers.Bakhtiari and his girlfriend went as the characters Vincent and Mia from the movie “Pulp Fiction.” Rodgers said the couple “basically danced as they danced in the movie to any song that was on. Hardcore rap at times. I gave Dave a lot of credit for that. It was phenomenal.”The party came a day after the Packers’ 29-27 loss to the Los Angeles Rams. Players were disappointed, but “nobody was hanging their head,” said Rodgers, pointing to the well-attended party as a sign of the health of the locker room.“But no, it’s a tight-knit group,” he said. “You’ve got to stick together through losses, through decisions that are made that are out of our control and keep moving forward with the same vision.”LEADING THE WAYPro Football Hall of Famers Will Shields and Aeneas Williams, three-time Pro Bowler Mark Brunell and three-time Super Bowl champion Willie McGinest will serve as the East-West Shrine Game legends captains. The four legends captains, who all played in the East-West Shrine Game JK Scott Jersey , will serve as mentors for players throughout the week and be present on the sidelines during the game. The 94th annual East-West Shrine Game, which features some of college football’s best prospects, will kick off at 3 p.m. EST on Saturday, Jan. 19, from Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Florida.GUARANTEE & GOLD MEDALSPro Football Hall of Famer Joe Namath and the U.S. Olympic Women’s Ice Hockey Team, which won gold at the Winter Games in South Korea last February, will be honored with the Sports Legend and Sportswomen of the Year Awards, presented by the March of Dimes Greater New York Market. They will receive the awards at a luncheon on Nov. 27 at the New York Hilton in Manhattan.MLB Commissioner Robert Manfred will also receive the Sports Leadership Award, and Stephen Espinoza, President of Sports and Event Programming for Showtime Networks, Inc., will get the Corporate Leadership Award. This marks the 35th year for the luncheon by March of Dimes, which honors achievements of men and women in the sports industry.RENEWED RIVALRYAtlanta’s Julio Jones faced Josh Norman plenty when Norman played at Carolina. The Falcons’ game Sunday at Washington will mark their first matchup with Norman playing for the Redskins. And, Jones doesn’t expect much trash talk from one of the league’s more loquacious defenders.“Josh really doesn’t talk much when we’re out there,” Jones said. “It’s just business. We’re used to going out there and working against each and just trying to play the game the right way.”Jones went so far as to call Norman a “great guy.”“I don’t have anything bad to say about him,” Jones said. “He plays the game like it’s supposed to be played. He’s trying to create turnovers for his team. He puts himself in different situations. He throws his body around and has no regard for his body just to get the ball out.”KICKING TO THE HALLAdam Vinatieri has kicked his way all the way to the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Well, at least part of him, for now.The Indianapolis Colts kicker’s jersey and cleats — worn last Sunday when he set the NFL’s career scoring record — along with the football he booted for the mark will be displayed at the hall’s museum in Canton, Ohio.Vinatieri finished the day with 2,550 career points, surpassing the previous record of 2,544 held by Hall of Famer Morten Andersen.

Winning any of the AP’s individual NFL awards J'Marcus Webb Jersey , from MVP to top rookie, means plenty to players.Being nominated for, no less winning, the Walter Payton Man of the Year award means more.Don’t minimize how proud a guy is when he’s voted one of the prestigious individual awards. It’s a portion of his resume that jumps off the page the way Saquon Barkley hurdles over potential tacklers. But being selected for the Payton award, renamed in 1999 for the great Chicago Bears running back and humanitarian, involves so much more than football achievements.“It is probably one of my greatest accomplishments,” says 2013 winner Charles Tillman, who played 12 seasons at cornerback for the Bears and his final year with the Panthers. “It really shows the true character of a person.“When fans see us, they just assume a lot of times we are just athletes. They don’t know what these men do on their days off during the season, in the community. A lot of players really put their community service in every week of the year. They get their charity work done and their volunteer work.“The Walter Payton Award is about excellence off the field. I am proud to be associated with that award.”Who wouldn’t be? In a time when many NFL players have been criticized or even condemned for their protests of social and racial injustice during the national anthem, many — if not most of them — also have been doing good deeds in their communities. They don’t do it for recognition or applause. As Tillman notes, they do it because they can “shed light on a bigger thing. It’s not just football. It’s about being a good person, serving other people and loving other people.”Unlike in the past, when three finalists were selected before a recipient was chosen, one player from every NFL team is a finalist. All will be recognized and participate in NFL functions during Super Bowl week. The Man of the Year will be revealed at NFL Honors, when The Associated Press’ individual NFL awards are announced Feb. 2 in Atlanta.Five current players have won the award: Drew Brees, Thomas Davis, Larry Fitzgerald, Eli Manning and J.J. Watt, and they wear a Man of the Year patch on their jerseys. All 2018 finalists will wear a Man of the Year helmet decal beginning this week through the end of the season.“It’s a tremendous honor,” Jets offensive tackle Kelvin Beachum says. This week, Beachum surprised Ca’moore Jones, an eighth-grade student at Orange Preparatory Academy in New Jersey, with two Super Bowl tickets. Moore was nominated by his teacher, Glenn Gamble, for his performance and growth with the Character Playbook course that is embraced by the NFL.“Just the name Walter Payton, he’s the gold standard Jordan Wilkins Color Rush Jersey ,” Beachum said. “What he did off the field and on the field, his excellence is bar none, top in history. So to be mentioned in the same name and the same breath as him, it’s truly humbling.”Humbling is an appropriate word because the award finalists often feel that sensation during their community work.“I’ve been blessed to play in this league for 13 years and to be a part of some really good seasons,” says Rams offensive tackle Andrew Whitworth, who is heavily involved with the Make-A-Wish Foundation. “But making a difference in someone’s life will go beyond football any day of the week. It’s not just about the game, it’s about the opportunity to bring people together. When I look back and think about my NFL career, the time spent out in the community giving back to people in need will always be the most touching to me.”Adds Colts DE Jabaal Sheard: “With our jobs as NFL players comes a huge platform to brighten and improve the lives of others, and that’s what I strive to do every day.”Tillman knows firsthand how kind and giving people can be. His own family was helped in 2008 when his infant daughter Tiana needed a heart transplant. Magali Garcia, the mother of 9-week-old Armando, who died in a Minnesota hospital, offered her son’s heart. To Tillman, Magali Garcia is a hero, not him. She is what the Payton award is all about.“When my daughter needed a new heart, another person stepped up and decided to take a bad situation and turn it into a success story,” Tillman says. “She not only blessed my family but other families with her choice.“For all we do in our foundation, it is a great blessing for what this woman did for her son. Magali, she is the one who actually is blessing those people, blesses them every day, and doesn’t even know it. She served my family and a lot of families and she made an amazing choice. A tough decision. I think about her son a lot and I truly am sorry. She is a part of my family, and for us to have this story that has bonded us, and this connection, and to turn that negative into something positive by blessing other people … I get great satisfaction in that.”So when the NFL Honors program is televised the night before the Super Bowl, pay special attention to the names below. Criminal charges were not filed, either. The New York Times initially reported in December 2016, without naming the parties involved, the board twice voted 3-2 in favor of the accuser before turning down a third request for a hearing. In June, The Fountain Hopper, an independent student-run website at Stanford, published details of the allegations and named Okereke as the accused football player. It didn’t come as a surprise to the Colts.Just hours after Okereke’s name surfaced publicly, general manager Chris Ballard told local reporters on a conference call that Okereke notified the team about the allegations during a January interview at the Senior Bowl. Ballard said team officials then took an exhaustive look into Okereke’s background, contacting school officials and reaching out to others close to Okereke. Ballard said he also told team owner Jim Irsay of the accusations before taking Okereke in the third round of April’s draft, No. 89 overall. But Ballard acknowledged nobody spoke to the accuser or her attorney and that it was a “very sensitive subject.”“When we looked at it and talked to him, it was an incident from four years ago. He was never charged with a crime, he was never disciplined by the university,” Ballard said. “He was a team captain, up for the Lott IMPACT award, he graduated with a degree in management and engineering and he’s working on a master’s. From everything we gathered, we felt it was appropriate to take him.”On the field, Okereke was a key player for the Cardinal. He made 240 career tackles, had 10 ½ sacks, forced three fumbles and returned an interception for a touchdown in 51 career games. He was a 2018 quarterfinalist for the Lott award, which goes to the nation’s top defensive player based on athletic performance and character. He’s also an Eagle Scout and organized school tours at Stanford for underprivileged children during a summer internship with former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice.Where he fits in with the Colts remains unclear. He spent most of the first three practices backing up Anthony Walker at middle linebacker and believes he will also be used on special teams.“I’ll play wherever they put me,” he said.

It involved an effort from defensive back Jason McCourty that, in hindsight, qualifies as downright superhuman. When Tyler Lockett was signed to a three year, $31.8 million extension prior to the 2018 season, many eyebrows were raised. By the time the Seahawks exited AT&T Stadium at the conclusion of their season, Lockett had answered any and all questions surrounding his worth. And, really, those questions were answered much earlier in the season. Over the course of the 2018 season, Lockett evolved from a tantalizing player, one who had flashed game-breaking ability as a rookie, to a legitimate, high-end playmaker. By now, Lockett’s efficiency in 2018 is widely known. The first receiver to have a perfect passer rating when targeted since 2006. The most yards per target, topping the previous high by over a full yard Ethan Pocic Color Rush Jersey , since targets began being tracked in 1992. One of 18 players since 1992 to catch double-digit touchdowns on fewer than 100 targets—and he did it on the third fewest (70). Time and time again, when Seattle needed to pick up chunks of yardage, Lockett was open, streaking down the sideline or across the middle of the field. His evolution included becoming elite at tracking the deep ball, and using contact at the perfect time and angle to create separation. Now set to enter the first season of his three year extension in 2019, and coming off a season that saw him produce 57 catches, 965 yards and 10 touchdowns, how can Lockett and the Seahawks further maximize his impact, without impacting the tremendous efficiency he had in 2018?Seattle and OC Brian Schottenheimer can do it with just a minor tweak, one that would serve to get the ball in Lockett’s hands with ease and help to get the offense’s other weapons in space. As offenses evolve and revolutionize across the league, a growing trend is the use of motion, jet sweeps and orbits. It’s an easy way to get the ball into a playmaker’s hands, force the defense to show their hand, or even just stretch out a defense horizontally before the snap. Sean McVay and the Rams have been at the forefront of this wrinkle, pacing the NFL with 36 jet sweeps in 2018—25 of those sweeps led to passes, and 11 were handed off. The Chargers were second, off in the distance with 20 (one pass, 19 runs). Not far behind L.A. was the Patriots, who were third with 18 (four passes, 14 runs). The Seahawks Shaquill Griffin Color Rush Jersey , despite their relatively unimaginative offense, were among a fairly large group outside the top three, joined by the Saints, Chiefs, Vikings, Bears and Colts. Of the 12 jet sweeps Seattle ran in 2018, they threw out of it three times, handing it off nine times (per Sports Info Solutions). Lockett, the one crossing the formation on the jet sweep more often than not, had a career-high 13 carries in 2018. Though they were towards the top of the league this past season, there is no reason for that number not to grow in 2019. There are numerous benefits to pre-snap motion, as outlined above, and absolutely no downside. When Lockett is given the ball on a sweep, he is the immediate threat that he is anywhere else on the field in space. And even when he doesn’t get the ball, the threat of Lockett taking a handoff can force the defense to make a decision. Against the Cardinals in 2017, the payoff came with Arizona flowing with Lockett to the boundary side before pitching it to an explosive playmaker in J.D. McKissic on the field side. Lockett’s impact in 2018 was massive, producing a career year which coincided with Doug Baldwin’s first truly injury riddled season. The offense faltered periodically throughout the season, but Lockett remained a constant. The Seahawks can continue to benefit from Lockett’s outstanding play in 2019, while helping along the rest of the team’s skill position players—and Russell Wilson—just by utilizing jet motion a couple extra times a game.

CLEVELAND (AP) — Baker Mayfield stepped onto the stage and took a handoff from former Browns quarterback Bernie Kosar. At least he got one postseason trophy.Mayfield Greg Joseph Jersey , who finished second to New York Giants running back Saquon Barkley in voting for NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year, was named Cleveland's top professional athlete at the Greater Cleveland Sports Awards on Wednesday night. Following a season in which he broke the league's rookie touchdown record and made the Browns relevant again, Mayfield was selected over Indians All-Stars Corey Kluber and Jose Ramirez and Browns cornerback Denzel Ward.LeBron James was not a finalist despite leading the Cavaliers to their fourth NBA Finals last June — a month before the superstar left for the second time as a free agent. If James crushed the feelings of Cleveland fans, Mayfield helped soothe them by leading the beloved Browns to a 7-8-1 record following an 0-16 season. The No. 1 overall pick in last year's draft, Mayfield began the season as a backup to Tyrod Taylor before coming off the bench in Week 3 and leading the Browns to a win over the New York Jets to snap Cleveland's 19-game winless streak. His performance last season has Browns fans convinced a first Super Bowl visit isn't far away."That should be the expectation," Mayfield said backstage. "It shouldn't be that the whole town goes crazy over one win on a Thursday. It should be the expectation that we need to be competing in the playoffs every year."He was introduced by Kosar, who didn't even bother opening the winner's envelope.Last week, Mayfield finished as a runner-up to Barkley, who received more votes from a panel of 50 media members for the AP's rookie award."I'll use it as motivation, but the more important thing is winning football games," Mayfield said. "Yeah, it's more frustrating than anything because Saquon, that's my guy, and he'll hold it over my head forever. But you know what? I'll use that as motivation, and I'll be better in the long run."Mayfield owes Barkley a chain necklace for winning the award, and said he'll use the jewelry to make fun of Barkley's massive quadriceps."It'll say ‘Quads' on it, not ‘Sa-quads' but just ‘Quads Jabrill Peppers Color Rush Jersey ,'" Mayfield said. "The two extra letters in there cost a little bit extra money, so we'll stick with just ‘Quads.'"Mayfield was featured along with numerous football Hall of Famers in the NFL's 100th-anniversary commercial, which aired during the Super Bowl.In the spot, Brady handed Mayfield his Super Bowl rings, which Clevelanders hope is a symbolic passing of the torch."Obviously, being a part of something like that is very special," Mayfield said. "Some of the names in that, if you told me last year that I would be a part of a commercial like that, I would've told you you're absolutely lying. So to be able to be a part of a commercial with legends like that and actually be next to Tom Brady, no matter what you think about it, that's the greatest of all time."To be able to actually hold those rings — and they are heavy, those were the real rings, it's something fun. Getting to talk to him a little bit and just get to know him and just be around like that, his presence is something that you feel as soon as he walks into a room. That's the kind of stuff you admire and I want to have when I finish playing."The annual black-tie event at the downtown Renaissance Hotel brought out some of the city's biggest sports celebrities, including new Browns coach Freddie Kitchens, general manager John Dorsey and Cavaliers legend Austin Carr.Former Indians All-Star catcher Sandy Alomar Jr. received a lifetime achievement award. A six-time All-Star, Alomar E.J. Gaines Color Rush Jersey , who currently serves as the team's first-base coach, got choked up when talking about his manager, Mike Hargove."I'm honored to be a part of Cleveland," said Alomar, who was traded to the Indians from San Diego in 1989. "Cleveland has been the best thing that ever happened to me. Cleveland is about humble people. And I love to make a difference here. That trade changed my life forever." Cleveland Browns:“Baker Mayfield hopes he’s dangerous enough to ‘put us back in the race’” (ABJ) - “Rookie quarterback Baker Mayfield expects to continue to feel dangerous enough on game days to carry the Browns to an elusive winning streak.”“Selfless Freddie Kitchens cheated death, continues to live life to fullest” (C-T) - “Freddie Kitchens thought — hoped might be more accurate — he was dehydrated. It was June in Arizona, after all.”“Bengals’ Joe Mixon the latest versatile RB to test Browns defense” (Browns.com) - “Plenty has been made of the Browns’ endless string of games this season against elite quarterbacks.”“Browns at Bengals: Thursday Injury Report” (247 Sports) - “The team returned to practice Wednesday with some rare decent weather in northeast Ohio. Thanksgiving was spent preparing for the Bengals as well.”“Browns fall behind in turnover race, seek to go out on top” (WKNR) - “Stretch run: The Browns have led the NFL in takeaways since Week 1 – until now. With six games to go, the Bears have taken the takeaway lead on the Browns by two, 27 to 25.”“Jim and John Harbaugh, Lincoln Riley, Bruce Arians and others on the Browns’ head coach radar or that should be” (Plain Dealer) - “The Browns are compiling their list of head coaching candidates, and by the end of the season they’ll be ready...”NFL:“Injury roundup: Marvin Jones might be back Week 13” (NFL.com) - “Detroit Lions wide receiver Marvin Jones, out last week and today with a bone bruise in his knee, has a chance to return and play against the Los Angeles Rams on Dec. 2...”“Lions’ Ezekiel Ansah sets Thanksgiving Day sack record” (ESPN) - “By sacking Chicago quarterback Chase Daniel in the third quarter of Thursday’s 23-16 loss to the Bears, Ansah set an NFL record for career Thanksgiving Day sacks with 8陆.”

Halfway through the 2018 season https://www.thepackersfanshop.com/Dave-Robinson-Jersey , the 6-2 Carolina Panthers looked like a sure-fire playoff team and perhaps a squad that could compete with the New Orleans Saints for the NFC South title. Two games between the two teams in the final 14 days of the season seemed like a tantalizing finish to the year in that division.Fast-forward to today and the Panthers are losers of five straight games, sitting at 6-7 and on the verge of nixing their playoff hopes entirely. Suddenly, they need a win over the Saints at home to just keep any realistic playoff hopes alive. That streak did feature four road games, but there were winnable contests against Detroit, Tampa Bay, and Cleveland in that span.Christian McCaffrey has been a hugely productive player, with over 1,600 yards from scrimmage including a 100-100 game (rushing and receiving) against Seattle three weeks back, but the Carolina offense has scored more than 21 points just once in their losing streak. The Saints would surely love nothing more tonight than to put their divisional rivals’ playoff hopes on life support while taking another big step towards home-field advantage in the NFC. They can clinch that status with two wins out of their last three games, thanks to a head-to-head win over the second-place Rams.Tune in tonight for this game as we close the book on week 15.WHO?New Orleans Saints (11-2) vs. Carolina Panthers (6-7)WHEN?Monday, December 17th, 20188:15 PM Eastern TimeWHERE?Bank of America StadiumCharlotte, North CarolinaHOW?TV Broadcast: ESPNOnline Streaming: ESPN.com or ESPN appCommentators: Joe Tessitore, Jason Witten, Anthony McFarland, Lisa SaltersRadio Broadcast: Westwood One SportsANYTHING ELSE?OddsSaints favored by 6.5 pointsOver/under total: 51.52017 GamesWeek 3 2017: Saints 34, @Panthers 13Week 13 2017: @Saints 31, Panthers 212017 Wild Card: @Saints 31, Panthers 26All-Time Head-to-Head RecordRegular Season: Panthers lead 24-22-0Playoffs: Saints lead 1-0 One of the great quests of football analytics is to come up with a good way to compare the values of positions in the NFL. This is quite difficult, and there is shockingly little consensus as to just what makes an offense or defense tick. In 2006 Michael Lewis followed up “Moneyball” with “The Blind Side,” which blended the story of offensive tackle Michael Oher with support for the notion that left tackles were extremely important, perhaps second only to the quarterbacks they protect. Subsequent research, however, has shown that sacks correlate more with who the quarterback is than who is playing on the line.I don’t doubt that left tackle is extremely important Aaron Jones Jersey , but it’s probably not as important as Lewis’s book posited. There are also a lot of very smart analysts and thinkers who claim that pass rush is the most important aspect of defense, and that edge rushers are consequently the most important players on defense. This makes a lot of sense intuitively, but there is some research that suggests the secondary actually aids the pass rush more than pass rush aids the secondary, which would make corners more important. I happen to believe that corner is more important in the current NFL, but I could be wrong, and in reality you need both aspects to succeed for a defense to succeed. The various pieces of a football team work as an integrated unit, and it’s difficult to analyze those pieces as separate entities, but even though we don’t know everything, we do know a few things. Quarterback dwarfs the value of all other positions. Running backs are the least valuable players by a substantial margin. That’s all I’d say we know for sure. We think safeties are less valuable than many other positions (mostly because as corners age they often become safeties, meaning there is a healthy supply of safeties available), inside linebackers seem to be less valuable, and offensive guards are less valuable than offensive tackles, but that’s about it, and if research overturned any of this, I wouldn’t be too shocked. The position that you almost never see discussed is wide receiver. I suspect receivers are underrated, and that they are almost certainly the second-most important position group on offense and maybe overall. The 2018 Packers had holes at outside linebacker, safety, and tight end, but the biggest issue for the offense (after Rodgers) was a lack of depth at receiver behind Davante Adams. Receiver has been an issue since 2015, and when the offense has rebounded, it’s because they have had at least three above average receivers. When they’ve struggled, it’s been a one man show. The One Man ShowThe worst year of Aaron Rodgers’ career wasn’t actually 2018, it was 2015. The primary cause of those struggles was the loss of Jordy Nelson. This, in and of itself Kenny Clark Color Rush Jersey , should lend a ton of support to the idea that receivers are extremely important. The loss of Nelson left Rodgers with Randall Cobb, who had a terrible year as the go-to receiver, a still-green Davante Adams who missed time with injuries, and the return of James Jones, who was fine. That’s a bad group. The following year, in 2016, Rodgers had his best recent season. His completion percentage jumped from 60.7% to 65.7%, his Y/A jumped from an awful 6.7 to 7.3 (which still isn’t great), and his TDs jumped from 31 to 40, with no real uptick in interceptions. The reason for that jump in production has almost nothing to do with Rodgers, and everything to do with the return of Jordy Nelson, the growth of Davante Adams, and late in the season, the addition of Jared Cook at tight end. Randall Cobb saw his catch percentage shoot up as well, as the defense’s attention focused elsewhere.Rodgers was hurt for most of 2017, but it’s clear that the loss of Cook and some decline from Nelson hurt, even in limited action. In 2018, the failure of Jimmy Graham to replace Cook’s production combined with the injury to Geronimo Allison left the team without enough real weapons. While Marquez Valdes-Scantling and Equanimeous St. Brown had nice seasons for late-round rookies, they were not true “number two” (or “number three”) receivers. Rodgers relied heavily on Adams in the passing game, and while Adams is great and produced nice counting stats, he wasn’t efficient as he finished 30th in DVOA. There is a cliche that defenders/defensive coaches use with great wide receivers: “We’re fine if they get their yards, but we can’t let them beat us.” That’s exactly what happened with Adams in 2018. Knock-On EffectsWhen Lewis wrote “The Blind Side” he focused on all of the positive externalities produced by a good left tackle. He gives the quarterback time which allows receivers to get open. He keeps the quarterback from taking hits, and therefore from getting hurt. He is also crucial to the run game. In short, Lewis claimed that left tackles make everyone better. Receivers are https://www.thepackersfanshop.com/Mason-Crosby-Jersey , debatably, more responsible for each one of these. A receiver who flashes open early in his route will allow the quarterback to throw before the pass rush becomes an issue. A group of good receivers will drag defenders out of the box, opening up the running game. And the more good receivers you have on your team, the better each one’s matchups will be.This season, Adams found himself facing top corners with routine. Darius Slay, Kyle Fuller, and Xavier Rhodes all play in the division, and generally speaking, a team’s best corner is much better than their second best corner, their second best corner is much better than a their third best corner, and so on. Depth at receiver not only puts pressure on the defense’s depth, it also makes it easier to scheme your best receiver against substandard defenders, and that leads to better efficiency for everyone, including the quarterback. A receiving corps is a bit like a major league pitching staff. If you add an ace to the top of the staff, you don’t replace the previous ace, you replace the 5th starter. The previous ace just gets knocked down a spot, but still pitches almost as much, and may find himself up against non-aces more frequently. Adams is a great weapon, but without any other weapons, his ability to occupy a defense is being wasted. My One WishIf the next coach of the Packers can’t fix Aaron Rodgers, nothing else they do will matter. But one thing that would help and my one offseason wish for the team is a free agent veteran receiver to play opposite Adams. I don’t even think it needs to be a particularly great or expensive receiver, but that spot is secretly the biggest hole on the team and fixing it should be relatively inexpensive. If they can plug that hole and if the rookies can take a step forward as reasonable third and fourth options, the offense can turn things around in a heartbeat.

The Indianapolis Colts traveled to play the Houston Texans for their second meeting of the season in hopes of regaining their offensive prowess that they put on display during a long win streak. Things did not start out well https://www.coltsfanshop.com/Anthony-Walker-Jersey , though, on that side of the ball for the Colts as they failed to earn a first down in the first quarter, and things only got worse as the defense was at the mercy of some really poor officiating early on as well. The Colts defense, again, played very well to keep the damage to a minimum while the offense was struggling, but thankfully the Colts got back on track with the football. In the end, the Colts were able to squeak another win out — 24-21 — as they’ve now won 6 of their last 7 games with the Wild Card race heating up in the AFC. Here are a few takeaways from the Colts big divisional win over the Texans.T.Y. Hilton tears up the Texans secondary yet againIs there any more of a sure thing than to say that Hilton is going to destroy the Texans’ defense — especially when the game is in Houston? Not only did Hilton shred the secondary again today, but he accumulated a large portion of those yards while visibly being less-than-healthy.Today Hilton put up 199 yards on 9 catches (22.1 yards per reception) https://www.coltsfanshop.com , and added to his impressive totals when he plays at NRG Stadium. Hilton has now put up 933 receiving yards on 41 catches (22.75 yards per catch) while playing in Houston and continued a very nice stretch of the season for him in which he’d put up 466 receiving yards over the past four games.Hilton has now amassed 665 yards in his last 5 games alone. That’s pretty impressive.I myself have questioned whether or not Hilton was a true No. 1 receiver, and at least as of late Hilton has put those questions to bed. He tends to do that pretty regularly once his status is questioned, actually. One thing that cannot be disputed is that Hilton’s importance to the viability to the Colts offense, especially this year.Luck doesn’t have much in the way of playmakers in the receiving corps this year, and it’s equally impressive that Hilton continues to produce in all areas of the field with that fact riding on his shoulders. Colts defense continues to get into opponent’s backfieldThe Indianapolis Colts had totaled 51 tackles for loss previous to their Week 14 matchup with the Houston Texans, and they continued their impressive play in that regard Sunday afternoon. The Colts racked up 9 TFLs, and 5 sacks today as they disrupted the red hot Texans’ offense and their signal caller Deshaun Watson and their running backs. The Colts, as a whole Indianapolis Colts Customized Jerseys , also continued their very good run defense that they’ve featured this year as they’ve only allowed 3.9 yards per rush — good for 7th in the league. The Colts only allowed 2.7 yards per attempt(54 yards on 20 carries) from the Texans’ running backs today, and this late in the season there’s no argument that it’s no fluke from this young squad. If the Colts are able to squeeze their way into the playoffs, their ability to continue to disrupt the opposing offense’s backfield will play a large role in how far they could potentially go.The Colts’ running game simply must get it togetherOver the previous four games to Week 14, the Colts rushing attack had accrued 342 yards on 93 carries (3.68 YPC). There’s very little that’s impressive about those numbers, regardless of the consideration to how great Luck has been through the overwhelming majority of the season. Today, the Colts could only manage 34 rushing yards on 17 carries (2 yards per carry) from their running backs, and that cannot become the norm for a backfield that has to complement the passing game in order for them to maintain any success with the ball in their hands. At first blush, it’s hard to say whether it might be the run blocking up front Indianapolis Colts T-Shirts , the backs themselves who just aren’t getting it done, or a combination of the two. Either way, Frank Reich and his offensive staff have got to put their brains together to figure out the issue. It’d be one thing had the running game failed to show what they can accomplish at all this season, but we absolutely have seen the potential in this case.I don’t think anyone expects them to break the 200-yard mark every week on the ground, but something close to a 4.5-yard per carry average certainly shouldn’t be too much to ask either. The Seattle Seahawks are hoping Mychal Kendricks can provide a short-term boost on the field that overshadows the issues of signing a player with a pending jail sentencing in his future. The Seahawks announced the signing of Kendricks on Friday to a one-year deal despite his recent guilty plea on insider trading charges. It’s an odd situation for all parties involved Michael Dickson Color Rush Jersey , but fills a need for Seattle even if it’s just for a short time. Kendricks could make his Seattle debut on Monday night when it plays at Chicago, and the finalization of his deal came after visiting the team on Thursday.Kendricks was not made available to speak with the media on Friday. Seattle coach Pete Carroll is scheduled to address the media on Saturday before the team leaves for Chicago.Kendricks pleaded guilty last week to insider trading charges in Philadelphia. His sentencing is expected in January. He signed a one-year contract with the Cleveland Browns in June after winning a Super Bowl title last season with the Philadelphia Eagles, and he was released by the Browns on Aug. 29 after the charges were filed. While Seattle is signing Kendricks to add depth at linebacker, it’s unclear how long he might able to play because the NFL has yet to impose any discipline.NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy said Thursday night the situation is under review and Kendricks is currently allowed to sign and participate in activities, including games. That makes for a strange situation considering Kendricks’ guilty plea.Kendricks’ signing is largely because of injury concerns at linebacker. Seattle is without K.J. Wright after minor knee surgery late in the preseason and he only began running this week. Additionally, All-Pro linebacker Bobby Wagner is dealing with a groin injury suffered in the opener that kept him out of practice both Thursday and Friday, and his availability for Monday night is unclear.Veteran Duane Brown said Kendricks’ situation wasn’t addressed in any team conversations prior to the announcement of the signing.“I’m not very clued in to the particulars of everything that is going on,” Brown said. “But I know he’s a heck of a player. I’ve competed against him a couple of times when he was in Philly. I know he can be a good addition to our team. Everything else will have to handle itself and let that process play out. We’re embracing him. He’s here now. He’s part of the team.”Federal prosecutors said Kendricks used tips from an acquaintance to make about $1.2 million in illegal profits on four major trading deals.Prosecutors say his co-defendant, Damilare Sonoiki, was paid $10,000 in kickbacks in the scheme from 2014-2015, as well as receiving perks such as tickets to Eagles games and tagging along to a music video shoot or nightclub appearances.Sonoiki had been working as a junior analyst at Goldman Sachs but left the financial field and has most recently been writing for TV shows. An IMDB profile lists him as a former writer on the popular TV series “Black-ish” as well as other movies and TV shows. In a statement released by his lawyer the day he was charged Alex McGough Color Rush Jersey , Kendricks said he was sorry and takes full responsibility for his actions.“While I didn’t fully understand all of the details of the illegal trades, I knew it was wrong, and I wholeheartedly regret my actions,” he said in the statement.Kendricks also claimed he didn’t take any of the profits for himself, but didn’t elaborate on where the money went.“I am committed to repaying all of the funds gained illegally and accept the consequences of my actions.”NOTES: Also not practicing on Friday were WR Doug Baldwin (knee), and starting CBs Tre Flowers (hamstring) and Shaquill Griffin (thigh). … WR Amara Darboah has reverted to the Seahawks injured reserve list. Darboah was waived when Seattle made its final roster cuts. He was signed by New England but underwent surgery on his shoulder/collarbone area after being signed by the Patriots. According to the league’s transaction report, Darboah’s contract with Seattle was reinstated. Darboah was a third-round pick in 2017.___ It’s Saturday, which means the final day of the 2019 NFL Draft is here. .Collins didn’t know what was happening when he was pulled from Triple-A Charlotte’s game at Rochester on Sunday Andrew McCutchen Jersey , but he got back to the clubhouse and manager Mark Grudzielanek told the catching prospect he was headed to the majors with the Chicago White Sox. Collins then called his dad Pat.“He was crazy and crying and jumping up and down,” Zack Collins said. “It was a pretty special moment. I honestly was just in shock. I didn’t know what to do. I didn’t know what to say. I was just extremely happy and gave my manager a hug.”The 24-year-old Collins was added to the roster before Tuesday’s 3-1 victory over the crosstown Cubs. The White Sox also placed catcher Welington Castillo on the 10-day injured list with a strained left oblique and reinstated reliever Jace Fry from the IL.Collins was selected by Chicago with the 10th pick in the 2016 amateur draft out of the University of Miami. He hit .250 with nine homers and 39 RBIs for Charlotte.“With Zack he was for us the obvious person to get up here and have an opportunity and sort of get a feel and taste for what it’s like and hopefully get some opportunities,” White Sox manager Rick Renteria said.Renteria did not use Collins in the series opener against the Cubs, but the lefty batter also can play first base and is highly regarded for his discipline at the plate. He ranked among the International League leaders with 36 walks in 50 games with the Knights. The White Sox optioned reliever Thyago Vieira to Charlotte on Sunday to make room for Fry, who is 1-2 with a 5.70 ERA in 29 appearances this year. Fry, who had been sidelined by left shoulder soreness, struck out the only batter he faced in the victory over the Cubs. The 32-year-old Castillo departed in the fourth inning of Sunday’s 10-3 loss to the Yankees. As it turns out, the Red Sox are still capable of playing winning baseball. (We, of course, already knew that but it’s still nice to see play out on the field, even in meaningless games.) This was a good all-around game from the Red Sox, with the offense breaking out a bit early in a performance highlighted by a Mookie Betts homer. It was the pitching that really stood out http://www.giantsfanproshop.com/authentic-evan-longoria-jersey , though. Chris Sale was back and he looked like Chris Sale again, at least in terms of results. The bullpen looked as good as it has all spring, too. Things appear to be coming together, for one day at least.Welcome back to our lives, ChrisAs I mentioned above, Chris Sale was back on the mound on Saturday. It wasn’t technically his first start of 2019, as he pitched in a minor-league game last week. It was his first major-league game, though, and it was the first time we got a chance to see him. The ace was fantastic, though he did give up a hard wall-ball single to start things off. After that, though, he was dynamite. They ended up catching Ozzie Albies on a steal attempt to cancel out that leadoff single, and in all after the base hit Sale retired each of the next eight hitters with six strikeouts. Albies actually got another base hit in his next at bat in the fourth, but Sale again came back with three straight outs after that. In all, the lefty tossed four scoreless innings with just the two singles allowed and seven strikeouts. In terms of stuff Gregor Blanco Jersey , his fastball velocity was down a bit, more in the 90-92 range. That’s not a major concern right now, though, as the Red Sox have had him reign in his velocity in past springs and did just that in his minor-league outing. Presumably, that’s what happened here. Even with the reducted velocity the results were obviously stellar thanks to impeccably command and strong showings from both his slider and changeup.Mookie Betts goes deepBoston’s biggest star on the pitching staff had a great showing on Saturday, and the offense got some help from their biggest star. Last year’s American League MVP has had a bit of an uneven spring and has been struggling of late, but he looked good against the Braves in this one. Mookie Betts went 2-3 on the day, starting things off with a single and a run scored in a two-run first for the Red Sox. Later, he came up in the sixth to lead off the inning against Braves reliever Shane Carle. In a 3-1 count, Betts got a ball down the heart of the plate a little down and he lofted it up over everything in left field. The solo shot gave Boston a 3-1 lead and was Betts’ first homer of the spring. He’s pretty good.Jasen Vinlove-USA TODAY SportsA rare, strong showing for the bullpenMore concerning than the losses this spring have been the individual performances from the bullpen. Obviously the relief corps is the biggest issue for this team looking ahead to the regular season, at least on paper, and the results this spring haven’t made anyone feel better. Saturday should help with that, as most of the relief appearances were solid. Matt Barnes came on for the fifth after Sale left, and while his velocity was a little down the results were still good. The likely closer in 2019 http://www.giantsfanproshop.com/authentic-evan-longoria-jersey , Barnes tossed a scoreless inning in which he allowed just a single and struck out two, the last of which was a strike-him-out-throw-him-out double play. Ryan Brasier came on next, making his first appearance of the spring after a slow start due to a toe infection. The righty was the worst pitcher of the day for the Red Sox, which is understandable given the presumed rust. He allowed a single to kick things off, then after a sacrifice bunt to move the runner up to second and a fly out, Brasier couldn’t escape. He allowed a single that knocked in Atlanta’s only run for the day. The inning did end with a strikeout. Brasier is going to be a big part of the bullpen this year. Look for him to get a lot of work as spring training wraps up over the next week-plus. Next up was Tyler Thornburg, who has had a dreadful spring so far. The coaching staff has made a point to note that his stuff has been up, but even Alex Cora acknowledged that at some point results need to follow. That’s what happened on Saturday. Thornburg had by far his best showing so far in 2019, walking one batter but otherwise doing his job with a scoreless inning that included a strikeout and no hits. A few more outings like that to close out camp will have people feeling at least a little better. Darwinzon Hern谩ndez finished things off with two scoreless innings. The spring phenom had some hiccups, but was still solid overall. He gave up a double to start his outing — the Braves only extra-base hit of the day — before coming back with three straight outs. The ninth began with a single and a wild pitch, but again he recovered and kept the Braves off the scoreboard. Hern谩ndez needs to smooth out some edges, but he can be a major help sooner than later if the Red Sox choose to push him.BOX
